You probably don’t think much about your toothbrush. After all, you probably only use it four minutes out of every day. But those four minutes are super important in order to ensure the best possible oral health, beautiful smiles, and healthy gums. FUN FACTS ABOUT TOOTHBRUSHES
- Blue is the most popular color for toothbrushes.
- In 2003, the toothbrush was voted the one item Americans could not live without, passing the computer and the car. The dentists here at Corsi Dental agree with this fun fact.
- It was the Chinese who invented what we would consider to be the very first toothbrush. It was made with hog hairs that were embedded into highly-decorative handles made from ivory, bone, or bamboo.
- The very first toothbrush was most likely a stick or hard grasses used by our ancient ancestors. We have evidence that the ancient Babylonians and Egyptians chewed on sticks to clean their teeth.
- Brushing your teeth did not become entrenched and propounded as a best practice until after World War II. In fact, it was the U.S Army who made soldiers brush their teeth, and after the war was over, this habit carried over into civilian life.
- The first toothbrush to be mass-produced was invented by a prisoner in 1770 in England. William Addis observed men in prison using a rag and salt to clean their teeth. He used an animal bone and some bristles to make a crude toothbrush that he then improved upon and sold after he was released. His company still exists in Britain today.
- It does not matter which comes first: brushing or flossing. What matters is that you do both.
