What Are Dental Implants?

Dental implants are a procedure where metal, screwlike posts are used to replace a tooth's root, while artificial teeth replace damaged or missing natural teeth. Dental implants are often used when the patient's teeth have either fallen out or need to be removed due to damage or decay. The implant acts as a replacement tooth and is anchored into the jaw giving the patient a secure, easy-to-care-for dental solution. These artificial teeth look and function much like real ones, making this an excellent option for those suffering from a loss of teeth.

The Benefits of Dental Implants

There are numerous benefits to going through an implant restoration procedure, including:

  • They are as easy to care for as your natural teeth. Unlike dentures which require you to use special adhesives and cleaners, your dental implant doesn’t need to be removed for cleaning and can be brushed and flossed just like natural teeth.
  • The dental implant prevents your remaining natural teeth from shifting out of place and helps to prevent bone loss in your jaw.
  • Implants provide you with the natural look of teeth, helping to enhance your smile!
  • Dental implants can help keep you free of gum disease, as no missing tooth gaps will be present.
  • Dental implants can prevent facial sagging and a prematurely aged look!

What To Expect

When it comes to implant restoration procedures, they usually occur throughout several appointments. The first phase is where the surgical placement of the implant occurs. You will receive local anesthesia or sedation so that you do not feel any pain. Your dentist will then cut into your gums to place the implant into the jawbone, wherever need be. Once placed, the dentist will close the gum over the implant so that it remains covered.

After this initial phase, you will have to wait a certain amount of months to give enough time for the bone to grow around the implant, making it strong enough to stay secured and in place. Once the implant is secure, your dentist will place a connecting piece called an abutment over the post of the implant, which will hold your new tooth into place! Soon after your gums are healed, your dentist will create your false teeth (crowns) and attach them to the abutment, completing the procedure!

Recovery

After each phase in the procedure, you may feel groggy or lightheaded, depending on the sedation method used. After the implants are placed, you may experience some minor bruising, swelling, bleeding, and general pain. It is best to eat soft foods, cold foods, and warm soup while you are healing. Your dentist may also suggest taking some over-the-counter medication for the pain.
