Nitrous Oxide Sedation

Dental anxiety affects many people in the United States, and the condition can become so severe that they avoid getting much-needed dental care. This can lead to serious oral health concerns, including periodontal disease, loss of teeth, and degeneration of the jawbone. If you are someone who avoids going to the dentist because of the fear and anxiety that you feel, Corsi Dental Associates can help.

Experience Stress-Free Dental Care With Sedation Dentistry

For many, sedation dentistry is the answer to getting the dental care they require without fear and anxiety. Dr. Corsi offers nitrous oxide sedation that can leave you feeling relaxed and calm as our dentist provides you with the dental care that you need. Sedation is an excellent option for those who may neglect their dental care due to the mental stress they face, so if you suffer from this, let your dentist know during your next appointment!

How Does It Work?

Nitrous oxide is administered through a mask that is placed over your nose. You'll breathe normally, and in just a few minutes, start to feel the effects of the gas. This sedation method doesn't put you to sleep; instead, you'll feel calm while remaining able to hear, speak, and answer questions that the dentist may ask you. The effects of nitrous oxide wear off once the mask is removed from your nose, and you'll even be able to drive yourself home after your dental work is complete.

Is It Safe?

According to the American Dental Association, the use of nitrous oxide as a sedation method is completely safe. The compounds used to create the calming effects are all deemed safe within the dosages we provide, and we are always sure to use the latest technology when administering the gas.

When the nitrous oxide enters your body, it works to slow down your nervous system to make you feel less inhibited. This is what provides you with the relaxation required to feel no nerves or anxiety about the up-and-coming dental procedure. The ultimate goal of this gas is to have you stay calm and comfortable throughout the duration of your visit.

Potential Side Effects

It is normal to feel a bit tingly or even as if your arms and legs are heavy when administered sedation. Most patients do not experience any sort of reaction to nitrous oxide. That said, certain side effects may occur if nitrous oxide levels rise too high or if the amount being inhaled quickly changes. These include:

  • Headaches
  • Shivering
  • Excessive Sweating
  • Nausea or Vomiting
  • Sleepiness

If any of this occurs, do not worry, as these are normal behaviors that are not likely to pose a threat to your health. As soon as the procedure is over, we will remove the mask, and everything should return to normal rather quickly, except now you will have a healthier mouth than before!
