When it comes right down to it, the truth is that our teeth get quite a bit of attention. In many instances, brushing and flossing are focused on getting our teeth as clean as possible, and that’s not a bad thing! It’s just that caring for your gums sort of gets lost in the process. Unfortunately, neglecting care for your gums leads to gum disease, also known as gingivitis. The numbers are alarming — well over half of Americans deal with gum disease to some extent or another.

Getting regular dental care ensures that we’re able to catch small problems before they become big problems. Because so many people have issues with their gums, we decided that it would be a good idea to share some dentist-approved tips for giving your gums the attention they need. At Corsi Dental, our goal is to offer our patients everything they need for healthy smiles. Keep reading to learn more!

What You Should Be Doing For Your Gums

So what can you be doing to properly care for your gums? A few simple tweaks to your daily dental care routine will get you most of the way there!

You already brush your teeth twice a day, but if you want to give your gums the best amount of care with the least amount of effort, we recommend switching to an electric toothbrush. Specifically designed to provide your teeth with the proper movement of the brush head, electric toothbrushes allow you to quickly and easily get tough spots. Use soft bristles, and be sure to move your toothbrush over your gums as well. This little thing will go a long way towards giving your gums the stimulation that they need to be as healthy as possible.

You probably also know that you should floss at least once a day. Think of it this way — your toothbrush allows you to get the front and back of your teeth clean, and the floss allows you to get the sides clean. It also allows you to offer some stimulation to the gums between your teeth that otherwise wouldn’t get much attention.

The last piece of the puzzle is to use a good antiseptic mouthwash to get rid of anything that’s still lingering in your mouth. An article from Columbia University explains why you should go with antiseptic mouthwash over other alternatives: “Antiseptic substances inhibit the growth and reproduction of many microorganisms, including bacteria, as well as fungi, protozoa, and viruses.” In other words, the bacteria that grows in your mouth and on your gums can cause big problems, but antiseptic mouthwash can help to stop it.

One downside of using antiseptic mouthwash is that it contains quite a bit of alcohol which may prove to dry your mouth out. Our advice? Stay hydrated. Not only will this help with dry mouth, but it will also improve your health overall, and good health leads to good oral health.
