It’s the most wonderful time of the year here in Woodbury, and people everywhere are gearing up to spend some quality time with family and friends. After all, isn’t that what the holidays are all about? At Corsi Dental Associates, we hope that the weeks ahead are filled with laughter and fun and delicious foods.
Speaking of which, the holidays are somewhat notorious for all of the people in your life coming out of the woodwork to surround you with sweet treats. Whether it’s your aunt’s famous peanut brittle, your coworker’s beloved caramel chocolate cookies, or your significant others insistence that you always keep eggnog in your home, the truth is that this time of year, candy will find you even when you’re not looking for it.
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
When it comes right down to it, our opinion is that you should definitely take advantage of the goodies that come along with the holidays. They only come once a year, so you might as well enjoy them while you can, right?
As you well know, sugary deliciousness can, however, wreak havoc on your teeth and gums. We’re not saying this to discourage you from having another slice of chocolate mousse pie or anything like that, but with the hustle and bustle of the season, it can be easy to slip into dental complacency.
What we mean by that is that it’s all too simple to think, “I’m so tired after having people over, so I’m just going to go to bed without brushing my teeth…because skipping once won’t hurt…probably.” You’re right that not brushing your teeth one night probably won’t have a big impact on your overall oral health. The reality though is that it can lead you down a path that you’d probably be best not traveling. In other words, skipping out on brushing your teeth once can lead to you doing it again, and then again after that. It can be a vicious cycle!
What’s a Person To Do?
Here’s our advice: enjoy your holiday treats if that’s something you want to do, but make it a point to keep up with your oral health routine. We recommend a routine of flossing, brushing, and rinsing with mouthwash at least twice a day.
Can you go through the routine more than that? Most definitely! You can do it as much as you like, but be sure to give your mouth about fifteen to twenty minutes after eating or drinking anything before you brush. That’s all there is to it!
